With regard to the item of $860 compensation to the widow for loss of her son, the enclosed extract from the Minutes of Executive Council will explain to Your Lordships why it has been put on the estimates. The $1500 have been long expended but the Governor submitted to the Council the propriety of continuing the grant.

In the Harbour Department an increase of $2 per month has been sanctioned to the salary of the Head Boatman who has been for a great many years in the service and also $2 per month to the salary of the caretaker of the steam launch who holds a responsible position. An increase of $200 to Contingencies is rendered necessary by the additional work on Marine Courts by Ordinance 8 of 1879. The receipts imposed under this ordinance however will, I think, well cover all outlay under it.
